LiFi communication masks

In October 2025, the Republic of Palau will host a world first : the very first underwater conversation broadcast live using Li-Fi technology .

For the first time in history, a head of state will speak under the waves, alongside freediver Merle Liivand , with the participation of Gunter Pauli and Idriss Aberkane .

The message is universal: the ocean is not a barrier, but a bridge between people, innovation and life.

✨ Why this is historic

  • First presidential underwater conversation

  • Voice transmission via Li-Fi (light, not radio waves, which do not pass underwater)

  • Bone conduction masks for a natural and fluid exchange

  • From Palau to the rest of the world: a strong signal for innovation, biodiversity and the future of the planet

🌍 A global collaboration

This event would not have been possible without cooperation across five continents , bringing together:

  • The Government and the Presidency of Palau

  • Blue Education & Blue Innovations

  • Acer , technology partner

  • The Palau Visitors Authority (PVA) and the Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC)

  • An international team of engineers, divers, producers and storytellers

⚡ Technology: When light becomes a voice

As early as 1880, Alexander Graham Bell was already experimenting with his "photophone," capable of transmitting voice via a beam of light.
Li-Fi technology allows data to be transmitted through LEDs, faster than 5G , securely, and in a way that is impossible to hack.

In October 2025, for the first time, this innovation will allow human voices to travel underwater – as dolphins and whales have been doing for millions of years.

📅 And then what?

The first production run of 100 Li-Fi underwater communication systems will be launched in 2026, opening up new possibilities for science, exploration, education and ocean protection.

On this page you will find information relating to the event in Palau (press release, event video, etc.) as well as information relating to LiFi communication masks (technical information, purchases, etc.)

During the live presentation, the connection was not sufficient to provide adequate feedback,
we are preparing a recap video of the event.
